Seeking a Food Chemist with a Specialty in Toxic Metals and their transfer and presence in infant foods. This role will focus on arsenic as a poisonous substance known to cause cancer and neurodevelopmental effects in infants and children. Long-term dietary exposure to arsenic and other toxic elements (lead, cadmium, etc.), poses a health risk to infants and children.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
· Shall conduct a literature search and write a review/perspective paper on the impact of processing on the toxic metal content of food.
· Shall design and conduct laboratory experiments to evaluate the effects of filtering and other processing treatments on the toxic metal content of juices and other beverages.
· Shall conduct experiments that aid in evaluating process methods such as milling on chemical contaminants in grain used for infant foods such as rice, barley, and/or wheat.
· Conduct a literature search and write a perspective/review paper on the impact of processing on the toxic metal content of foods and beverages.
· Participate in a research project entitled “Impact of Processing on Toxic Elements and Chemical Contaminants in Infant Foods and Beverages.”
· Design and/or assist with lab-scale and pilot-scale experiments that evaluate toxic metal and other chemical contaminant transfer/formation/removal to/from beverages and other foods.
· Design and perform laboratory analyses for toxic metals and chemical contaminants in beverages and food products using established analytical methods.
· Analyze and interpret research data to evaluate laboratory performance. Perform and interpret statistical analyses of data generated from lab experiments. Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals, posters for presentation at scientific conferences, and application notes.
NECESSARY SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
· Knowledge of filter aids used in the food industry to clarify beverages, as it’s necessary to evaluate the transfer of arsenic and other heavy metals from filter aid into juices, particularly those consumed by infants and children.
· Knowledge of identifying the types of filter aids used by the U. S. beverage industry to investigate arsenic and other heavy metals introduced into clarified beverages (juice), by the filter aid of interest.
· Must be able to determine key factors contributing to elevated levels of arsenic and other heavy metals in beverages.
· Must be able to investigate the effectiveness of chelating and washing treatments for removing heavy metals from filtering aids and preventing the transfer of heavy metals to beverages.
· Knowledge of evaluating filtration treatments that do not involve the use of filtering aids and other treatments that may be used to reduce the toxic metal content of beverages.
· Knowledge of investigating other processing methods and their potential impact on toxic metals and other chemical contaminants in infant foods, such as those made from cereal grains such as rice, wheat, or barley.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Food Sciences, Food Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a related field.
· Previous experience with elemental analysis and running the pilot plant.
· Previous experience with lab-scale processing equipment.
· Must have at least one (1) year of relevant laboratory experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· Ph.D. in Food Sciences, Food Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or related field.

Seeking an ARP/GAIHN Microbiologist IV in the Atlanta, GA, area.
Essential Job Functions:
Design, organize, conduct, and lead complex laboratory research studies, including determining necessary materials, equipment, reagents, methods, any administrative review (IRB, OMB), and the composing of procedures needed to carry out and collect data from research studies successfully.
Summarize and compare performance characteristics of diagnostic methods used for phenotypic (e.g., antimicrobial susceptibility testing [AST], carbapenemase production testing) and molecular (PCR-based and WGS-based) testing.
Maintain complete and detailed records of all stages of studies electronically and on paper.
Prepare written summary reports of study data and present key findings in formal oral presentations to leadership.
Perform comparisons of cost, availability, workflow efficiencies, additional resources required, and more to assess the value of using various methods and products.
Attend and contribute technical input to the routine team and project meetings focused on domestic and global testing activities.
Convene meetings and working groups with primary points of contact and subject matter experts to strategize and plan implementation, discuss available data on testing methods and generate recommendations for laboratory testing methods and workflows.
Perform literature reviews to assess available evidence and data on diagnostic methods.
Communicate with internal and external partners to provide insight into methods/products and technical assistance on methods/products used.
Prepare summaries, reports, and slide decks to update internal and external partners on ongoing and planned activities.
Provide technical expertise to inform phenotypic and molecular test reporting requirements.
Maintain familiarity with domestic and international regulatory requirements (e.g., CLIA, ISO) for specimen testing and quality assurance.
Analyze data from scientific projects and programs using appropriate programs (e.g., Excel, SAS, R, Python, etc.) and methods.
Develop, revise, and review project protocols, guidance documents, and validation tools according to CEMB standards.
Site visit travel as required by CEMB to guide partners on testing protocols, data reporting, and programmatic recommendations related to GAIHN.
Summarize data and critical findings for presentation to various scientific and non-scientific audiences.
Conduct or support site visits to guide partners on testing protocols, data reporting, and programmatic recommendations related to GAIHN.
Develop training to assist external partners in implementing new methods

The Agriculture and Fertilizer Analyst provides analytical support to EB/TPN/AGP Action Officers in implementing a food security policy that seeks to support global food security programming and to provide increased coordination with USAID on Feed the Future and other food security programs.
The analyst will work across many teams and manage our agricultural and fertilizer demand market data and analysis. The ability to work with large data sets and explain complex ideas simply and concisely to internal and external stakeholders will be essential.
The Analyst should have a keen eye for detail and enjoy the challenge of collecting data from diverse sources.
Duties include:
Provides external outreach support to AGP Action Officers in conjunction with EB/EPPD and E/GFS on food security issues in developing countries
Provide data analysis on fertilizer production, including reviewing agricultural markets and fertilizer demand. -
Provide data analysis on shifting agricultural production and food security, including reviewing agricultural markets. -
Supporting AGP in maintaining agricultural production and fertilizer demand models and data consistency. -
Undertaking primary research tasks to develop and improve data presented on fertilizer use globally and agricultural shifts due to climate and/or food security. -
Written analysis within short and long-term market reports. Supporting policy developments through recommendations. -
Collaborating and coordinating with other members to ensure consistency of message.
Job Requirements
Education
High School Diploma
GED or related experience; BA/BS preferred.
Qualifications
Have one year of specialized experience, which included the use of quantitative and qualitative techniques for analyzing and evaluating complex mission-oriented programs and projects for an organization.
Experience developing project and program plans, goals, objectives, and milestones involving complex programs, systems, or issues of critical importance to the entire organization.
Experience assessing project progress, conducting briefings, and preparing comprehensive reports with solutions and recommendations for top-level managers and executives.
Ability to obtain and maintain a suitable security clearance and DoS badge.
